Covert private investigator surveillance is used to establish facts, prove or disprove a theory, gather intelligence or verify a claim. Private investigators are used to conduct surveillance because they are experienced, and have the correct equipment, and knowledge, to lawfully carry out the assignment.
A private investigator can receive training, but basically it comes down to having the knack for surveillance. Our operatives have that 'knack'. We are aware of the requirements for lawful actions, especially where there is an intention to take the evidence to court; private investigator surveillance, when done correctly, is lawful. Many people are unaware of the fact that surveillance is designed to be unintrusive. It is the observation of an unaware subject, to observe their actions, interactions and capacities. Surveillance should not be an overt action, designed to intimidate, in the way stalking is done.
Surveillance is used for Workcover (Safework) investigations. It is used where it is considered prudent, because of large exposure to a claim (a person claiming total and permanent disability, sometimes with a full time carer), or there is suspicion that the claimant is not being wholly truthful, a claim fraud. Private investigator surveillance is done over an extended period (usually a week or so, then a break, then further surveillance if there is evidence of inconsistencies with the claimed restrictions; this may be extended to month periods where the exposure is great and the inconsistencies obvious). One incidence of evidence of capacities other than those claimed is not generally considered sufficient, everyone is entitled to a good day, you are looking for evidence of inconsistencies over a period of time.
One of the classic areas for surveillance is where relationship suspicion exists. We are hired to investigate a suspected affair, cheating; the best legal option to conduct such an investigation is the observation of the parties suspected. This requires time 'on target' and a good brief; private investigator surveillance is undertaken over a period, normally a number of consecutive days. It is done this way because you are dealing with multiple unknowns; does the other party have a partner? do they have the flu this week? or their period? Is there something happening in someones life (a party, a family get together, a medical emergency), that we cannot know about, but which will impact the behaviour of the other party, not your partner? These influences on behaviour create the unknowns of a surveillance assignment; so surveillance is done over an extended period to counter this.
Please resist the urge to conduct surveillance yourself; there are many tricks to surveillance, and you need more front that a rat with a gold tooth, and the knack for being overlooked, to be successful at this. It is hard to be dispassionate when you are emotionally involved, or feel that the actions of another threatens your world. Private investigators then find it harder to conduct effective surveillance when someone has already heightened the senses of the subject, by being caught.
